We are an association founded for the descendents (with their spouses) of Second Lieutenant Erik Stenroth (1688–1766).
The Stenroth Family Society works for the benefit of its members, relatives and associates, acting as the guardian of our common history to create a common future.
We arrange parties and excursions, attend cultural events, and publish a family magazine called Kivenjuuret -- literally “Stone-Roots” -- as well as genealogies and family-books.
We collect family stories and photographs, and maintain a genealogical website www.stenroth.net/.
Our earliest known ancestor, Erik Stenroth, was a faithful soldier to King Charles XII of Sweden. He joined the army in 1709, retiring after 50 years of service in 1759. During his long career he fought in two major wars with Russia, known in Finland as “The Period of Great Wrath” (1713-1721) and “The Period of Lesser Wrath” (1741-1742), and survived the tragic military expedition to Norway which resulted in the death of his king at the Battle of Fredrikstad in 1718.
Erik Stenroth established his family after the Peace of Uusikaupunki in 1721, marrying Kristina, daughter of the vicar Nils Krook, in Saarijärvi.
They had six children, four of whom continued the family line. Accordingly, we have divided our Stenroth Family Tree into four branches: Katarina (1724–1804), Henrik (1727–1774), Sara (1732–1831) and Nils (1734–1799).
We have so far recorded over 25,000 names in our Family Database, spanning a period of nearly 300 years. They represent Erik’s and Kristina’s descendents, their spouses and their spouses’ parents, who now inhabit every continent in the world.
Yet we have perhaps still not reached the half-way mark. It is for this reason that we have named our next family-book “Intermezzo of the Stenroths”.
